Our Digital Marketing Predictions for 2017
With a new year ahead of us, many in the digital sphere are turning their heads to the latest trends and technology to build into their social and digital strategies. We give our predictions of what to expect and what to get stuck into this year.
What do we think is going to be big in digital marketing in 2017?
Lauren says “every aspect of digital marketing is reliant on each other, so it’s difficult to predict which will be the most important. With the recent fake news scandals and growing number of click-bait articles, quality content and a good content strategy will be even more important than before.”
Kara believes “there are already signs that there is less distinction between marketing and digital marketing and that’s only going to continue to be the case. I think we’re going to see smaller businesses up their game when it comes to marketing, where they’ve previously been at a disadvantage to larger companies because of budget and reach.”
Phil agrees, adding “with smaller businesses being able to get their hands on resources such as software and talent normally reserved for the big guns, I think this year will see a lot more examples of ‘viral’ type content coming from smaller businesses and (hopefully) disrupting the marketing landscape.”

As we leave 2016, what lessons and successes should we bring with us into 2017?
Lauren points out “video marketing is continuing to be an integral part of any digital marketing strategy, particularly with the rise of in-app video streaming on platforms such as Facebook and Twitter. It’s a great way for small businesses to connect with their audience.”
Kara adds “businesses are seeing the benefits of producing video in the form of interviews, tutorials or of live events. They offer consumers an insight into how their business is run as well as handy sources of information sometimes preferable to information in long passages of text.”
It’s clear, especially with the advent of streaming live video, video marketing is definitely not going anywhere.
With so much technology coming out every few months, it’s difficult to know what tech to invest in, for either yourself or your clients. What new tech does Team Organic think is a sound investment?
Lauren suggests “it looks like augmented reality apps are only going to get bigger this year. With the success small businesses sought from dropping lures in Pokémon Go, there’s a chance they’ll be able to make the most of the latest releases of 2017 too.”
Phil however, is looking to gadgets as “360 degree cameras are getting cheaper all the time as well as the software to go with them. Going live on social media is currently the hottest trend, but with Twitter introducing a 360 degree format, it’s only a matter of time before this becomes the ‘cool’ thing to do.”
Kara places her bet on mobile apps, explaining the rise in mobile use “reflects the changes in consumer behaviour as customers will often switch between visiting websites and apps before making a purchase, particularly on bigger items. Businesses should always keep on top of changes in consumer behaviour and investing in apps, or at least making sure their website is mobile friendly, is one way to do this.”
Steer Clear for the New Year
It’s clear there’s plenty of opportunity in digital marketing this year, but what should you avoid in your new or refreshed social media strategy?
Lauren warns “posts trying desperately to relate anything to your own brand or campaigns that are done in bad taste are always a big no, so you shouldn’t make 2017 the year to try them out.”
Kara gives some sound advice when it comes to picking your social media platforms: “With more and more social media platforms cropping up it can be tempting to cover all bases and have an account on each to promote your business. The problem is when businesses do this they end up spreading themselves too thin.
Instead, pick one or two and base these choices on where your target audience is as well as where you’re getting the most engagement. Build them up and make sure they’re performing well before you start to think about any other platforms.”
